You've Got Nothing but Light, Let it Shine
Julia Ain Burns | 5 min, Super 8mm | Calgary

A wave crashes on a rocky beach and somewhere within this setting we see two hands juggling transparent spheres as a bird dives in and out of the rough seas; from here we dissolve to a POV of someone on a ride at an amusement park, but without the usual reverse shot that places us within that specific character’s point-of-view. Shot entirely on hand processed colour negative, and constructed without any sort of traditional protagonist, Julia Ain Burns’ collaboration with musicians C. Bjerring and Oldseed has the feel of an early Stan Brakhage short. Indeed, Burns’ insistence on keeping the film affective (in an enigmatic sort of way) causes a rush of emotion within us as the music crashes and recedes with the images, and conveys a keen imagination and originality beyond the usual cable music video.

Julia is particularly fond of artists and art havens. She currently resides in Calgary, Alberta. In 2001 she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree with a Film Production Major from Simon Fraser University. She was formally the Operations Coordinator for the Quickdraw Animation Society and is a co-founder and current Board Member of the Calgary Underground Film Festival. Lately she has been finding gainful employment in the film industry as an associate producer and business affairs coordinator.
