Kim Anderson | 3 min, 16mm | Calgary
Here’s a sweet animated piece that’s just impossible to not completely adore. Animator Kim Anderson structures an analogy for intimacy and life-long commitment through the kinds of abstract and surreal images, shapes and character-types that those affections summon in her, and perhaps our, minds. Two stick figures timidly share a kiss, then, they both remove and swap heads which morph into an elderly couple whose tongues protrude and extend out to the other, intertwining and spiraling out of the frame. From there we’re presented with a series of abstract shapes and patterns that dominate and sometimes overwhelm the eye, yet still maintaining a euphoric sense of joy and well-being. Anderson’s film is perhaps the only animated piece on the tour that lovingly remembers the work of great NFB animators such as Ishu Patel and Ryan Larkin.
Kim Anderson was born in Regina, Saskatchewan. She attended the Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary, Alberta and transferred to Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec where she graduated in Film Animation. She currently resides in Calgary and is working on a short film at Quickdraw Animation Society.
