Intergalactic Who’s Who: The Pork N’ Beings
Kevin D.A. Kurytnik &Carol Beecher | 1:30 min, DV | Calgary

The world of Zig 5 is a violent desert planet inhabited by exotic creatures. In this episode, the Pork N’ Beings are featured. Their only real function is to procreate: an act that becomes increasingly mysterious as our narrator explains that, once born, the Pork Ns simply stand in the same spot with eerily disturbing smiles until death. Inspired by the quaint series of documentary shorts Hinterland Who’s Who produced by the NFB in the 1970s, animators Kevin Kurytnik and Carol Beecher create a distinct setting with characters reminiscent of Walt Disney’s early experiments with anthropomorphism, and, perhaps subconsciously, the wild imaginings of Carl Sagan’s Cosmos (and kudos to the animators for channeling that great TV series). Intergalactic Who’s Who is the most deliciously sardonic animated film to come out of Alberta in years.

Kevin &Carol are animators located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Carol is a native Calgarian, while Kevin was born in Norquay, Saskatchewan. Neither one of them graduated as animators from the Alberta College of Art and Design in 1987, but Kevin got his major in Visual Communications, and Carol in Ceramic Sculpture. They are self taught film makers. Both of them are long time members of the Quickdraw Animation Society. Kevin is the digital media and animation instructor at the Alberta College of Art and Design. They have an animation studio called Fifteen Pound Pink Productions, because that's how much their cat weighed.
