Cea
Dominique Keller &Andrea Pass | 4 min, DV | Calgary
Cea is a filmed performance piece featuring dancers popping in and out of view within a field of wheat. The camera, mostly positioned at eye level, contrasts the wheat field with the blue prairie sky nicely and gives the choreography the feel of a synchronized swimming event (sans nose plugs). Not an overly stagy piece, as most filmed adaptations of works clearly meant for an auditorium, but instead a dance that probably wouldn’t exist without a true filmic sense guiding the narrative flow. Balance and composition become primarily important as the slow, melodic rhythms and quiet energy of the film offer a counterpoint to the bulk of the films included on this year’s tour, and fondly recalls our collective rural history.
Dominique Keller has recently returned from Europe working as a field producer for The Lonely Planet (now Pilot Guides) show which aired on PBS in the US and the Outdoor Life Network in Canada. As an independent filmmaker she produced, directed and shot a 22-minute documentary about a two-woman climb up Mount Kilimanjaro. Dominique teaches documentary filmmaking at the University of Calgary and NUTV.
